Historical background

Being king of the eastern franconian empire, Arnulf of Kärnten opposed the Vikings, which were reputed to be invincible so far. The Vikings invaded eastern Franconia on their way from Danmark. On 20 October 891 Arnulf faced them near the flemish region of Brabant (close to Löwen upon Dyle) and inflicted the assumingly greatest defeat in a field battle on the Vikings.

Arnulf of Kärnten (ca. 850 to 899 A.D.) entered history as the last karolingian sovereign and roman-franconian emperor.
